EXPRESSING INTENTION

Learning Objectives :

·        Students are able to comprehend the social function, structure, and language features of expressions to tell future plans and intentions (Siswa mampu memahami fungsi sosial, struktur teks dan ciri kebahasaan dari ungkapan yang memberitahukan rencana masa depan dan niat). 

·         Students are able to express future plans and intensions using the modals “be going to” and “would like to “ (Siswa mampu mengungkapkan rencana masa depan dan niat mengunakan modal).

·         Students are able to make transactional dialogs of future plans and intentions using the modals “be going to” and  “would like to”(Siswa mampu membuat dialog transaksional rencana masa depan dan niat menggunakan modal "Be going to" dan "would like to".

Social function:

·         To state plans or something intended to do in the future.

·   I would like to ......

·   I would rather ......

              The following are the functions of phrases used to give information about the intention of doing something.

 

I’d like to (Verb)

I will (Verb)

I am Going to (Verb)

I would rather (Verb) than…..

I would like to buy a ticket please

 

I’d like to = I would like to “ Would Like” means “want”, but it is more polite.

 

Functions :

·  Talk about dreams and ambitions

·  It lets someone know what you would be/ interest in doing something. This can be a physical, mental, or verbal action.

·  To talk about what people want to do or are willing to do.

·   At the moment we make a new decision or plan. The thought has just come into our head.

·   Instant decision

·   Plans decided at the moment of speaking.

·     When we want to talk about plan for the future.

·     This plan does not have to be the near future

·     To talk about plans decided before the moment of speaking

·     Activity or plan already in thought or motion or intention related to present time.

·     This is about to happen.

·     An activity that the person is about to do

Examples of Expressing Intention:

       ·    I would like to tell about my family

·     I will visit museum today

·     I want to make a pancake

·     I am going to introduce my friend

·    I would rather stay at home than go fishing

 

To express willingness: use will

(+) Subject + will + V1 + Object/Complement

(-)  Subject + will not + V1 + Object/Complement

(?) Will + subject + V1 + Object/complement

 

(+) She will visit her cousins on the next holiday.

(-) She will not visit her cousins on the next holiday.

(?) Will she visit her cousins on the next holiday?


To express a prior plan: Use only be going to

(+) Subject + Be going to + V1 + O/C

(-) Subject + Be not going to + V1 + O/C

(?) Be + Subject + going to + V1 + O/C

 

(+) She is going to visit her cousins on the next holiday.

(-) She is not going to visit her cousins on the next holiday?
