CONGRATULATION AND COMPLIMENT
Learning Objects

Express and respond to  congratulations and compliments.

Contoh Kalimat Congratulation(s)
Berikut beberapa contoh kalimat congratulation(s) berdasarkan artinya.
1.    A message congratulating someone; words that congratulate someone (pesan yang berisi ucapan selamat kepada seseorang; kata-kata yang berisi ucapan selamat kepada seseorang).

(Perkenankan saya mengucapkan selamat kepadamu karena diterima di Universitas Oxford.)

Expressing Compliment

Expression Compliment is an expression that we say to express or give praise to someone else.

Social function  of giving compliment :
a.       To improve relationship between people.
b.      To give compliment or encouragement.

Here are some common examples of expressing and responding to a compliment in formal and informal situations. Study the example carefully. You may ask your teacher if there are some words or expressions that you do not understand.

Example Dialogue The Expression of  Complimenting
Harsya             : What a great Motorcycle you have, Pandu.
Pandu              : Thank you, Harsya. I just finished modifying it.
Harsya             : You mean this is the old motorcycle that you used to drive to school?
Pandu              : Yes, it is.
Harsya             : It looks a lot different. What did you do to it?
Pandu              : Not much. I had it paint with a brighter colour and add some new accessories.
Harsya             : Great job!
Pandu               : Thanks.

    Structure of Giving compliment

When we give compliment,  we can add one sentence after the compliment.
Look at the structure below !

     Your hair is nice. It suits on your face
      Complimenting          Extension

a.       Noun Phrase + is/look + (really) + adjective
      Example : Your dress is really beautiful.

b.      I + (really) + like/love + noun phrase
       Example : I really like your dress.

c.       Pronoun + is + (really) + noun phrase
      Example : That’s a really nice painting.

d.      You + are + (so/really/very) + adjective
       Example : You are so smart.

e.       What + noun phrase !
      Example : What a lovely hat !

f.       How + adjective + S + be !
      Example : How beautiful she is !

Expressing  Congratulation

Situation 1
Andi had passed on his final semester test. On the way home, he meets Desi, his friend. She congratulates and compliments Andi.
Desi : Hi, Andi. How are you doing?
Andi : I am fine, thanks.
Desi : It’s very nice to meet you here, Andi. You look great today! I love your new hair style.
Andi : Thank you very much, Desi. You look great, too.
Desi : Thanks, Andi. By the way, how was your test? Have you got the result?
Andi : Yes, I’ve got it. You know what? I have passed for the final test. I’m so happy right now.
Desi : That’s great. Congratulations! How’s the score?
Andi : Thanks God. I got the highest score for the test.
Desi : Wow, that’s amazing. I know you are very smart, Andi. Well done!
Andi : Thanks for your compliment, Desi. You are so kind.
Desi : Never mind Andi. It’s my pleasure.
Situation 2
Andi has won the national novel writing competition. The next day, Riska and Joko come to his house to congratulate him
Riska : Is it true what the newspaper’s headline said?
Andi : What news?
Joko : The news about you winning the national novel writing competition. Is it really you?
Andi : Yeah. It is me.
Riska : Congratulations! We’re happy for you.
Andi : Thanks a lot guys.
Joko : It’s a terrific job, Andi.
Andi : Oh, no, I guess it’s just my luck.
Complete the following table with the expressions of congratulations and the responses you find in the preceding dialogues (situation 1 & 2). The first now is done for you. 

COMPLIMENTS
Compliments is an expression to appreciate or praise other people. Compliment is useful to give encouragement so that people will keep on doing their best and even improve their performance.
When to express compliment :
·         On daily basis
·         When someone has done his/her best
·         When you visit someone’s house for the first time,
·         If you notice something new about someone’s appearance.

Putri    : I thought you were Dian Sastro.
Desi     : Stop joking around.
Putri    : I am not joking. I really love your new hairstyle. It makes you look prettier.
Desi     : Really? Thanks.
Putri    : Where did you get your hari done?
Desi     : I got it at the Star Salon
 Putri   : That’s strange! I also go to that salon to cut my hair when it’s due, but they have never                          given  me the hairstyle that looks best on me.
Desi     : Maybe that depends on who does your hair. You know, there are many hairdresser in the                      Star Salon.
Putri    : That may be right. Do you remember the name of the hairdressers in the Star Salon.
Desi     : Yes, it’s Bian Nugroho.
